New England Culinary Institute has been a leader in the field of culinary education for over 27 years. As you get to know us, you will recognize some distinctive features of NECI that have developed since the school was founded in 1980.
Most fundamental in the educational philosophy that has shaped NECI is our focus on the student. The school’s primary mission is to provide those who enroll with the skills needed for success in the hospitality industry. To succeed, NECI has small classes that meet long enough (in some cases eight to ten hours a day) for each student to receive the instruction and personal attention needed to acquire a good education.
Small class size, however, is not enough. Our instructors are skilled professionals and effective teachers. NECI officials search for talented chefs and restauranteurs with an interest in and an aptitude for teaching. Our chef instructors receive information constantly about their performance based in part on evaluations submitted by our students.
NECI helps its students track acquisition of the skills and attributes they need to become successful professionals through a unique, non-punitive evaluation system. In addition to helping students master industry-specific skills and knowledge, teachers measure student performance in a wide range of areas, depending on the program. In all programs, instructors measure stamina, punctuality, teamwork, coordination, organizational skills, memory, professionalism, and use of the senses.
NECI will never have large programs because administrators and teachers recognize that the learning process is different for each student. Not only must classes be small, but also the overall program size must allow the staff and administrators to know each student. This kind of education is much more expensive to provide, of course, but frequent testimonials from graduates and employers constantly renew our belief that the extra cost is worth it.
One final comment about NECI. Everyone at the school — students, teachers, staff, and administrators — is proud of the ideals that are inherent in the school’s philosophy. We know that the ongoing challenge is to constantly renew everyone’s understanding of our educational philosophy and adapt to the ever-changing conditions in the dynamic industry of which we are a part.
